Position Summary:

We are looking for a dedicated and proactive Safety Officer to ensure a safe working environment across our operations, as the company is committed to fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and operational excellence. The Safety Officer will be responsible for managing a broad range of safety protocols, training programs, and audits to reduce risks related to working at heights, confined spaces, chemical hazards, machinery, electrical systems, and more. This role requires a strong communicator who can enforce safety policies, promote a strong safety culture, and adhere to the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act of 2007.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training and Education:
    • Design and deliver comprehensive training programs on working at heights and confined spaces, including the selection, use, and maintenance of safety gear (e.g., harnesses, respirators).
    • Conduct first aid and fire safety training, ensuring compliance with OSH Act 2007 requirements for regular fire drills.
    • Provide periodic training to all teams, adapting content to evolving work dynamics and emerging hazards in DAC operations promoting a safety-first culture.
    • Lead in planning for external Safety training courses, ensure successful training sessions and certification of the trained personnel.
  • Risk Assessment/ Hazard Management:
    • Identify and mitigate chemical hazards, including spill response and airborne particulate matter control, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Oversee machinery and plant safety, focusing on boilers, cranes, pressure vessels, and other high-risk equipment.
    • Address electrical and tripping hazards through risk assessments and corrective action plans.
  • PPE and Health Initiatives:
    • Recommend and ensure the provision of suitable PPE for diverse work environments, tailored to specific hazards.
    • Promote employee health and awareness through regular campaigns and health screenings
  • Policy Development and Enforcement:
    • Develop and implement a clear, enforceable safety policy for internal employees and contractors, aligning with OSH Act 2007 and industry standards.
    • Act as a key communicator to enforce safety policies, building a strong safety culture across all levels of the organization.
  • Audits and Compliance:
    • Follow up to ensure safety audits are conducted at Giriraj facilities and all project sites, maintaining detailed records and addressing non-conformities.
    • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards, including fire drill schedules and safety certifications.
  • Incident Investigation & Reporting
  • Lead in-depth investigations into all safety incidents, accidents, and near-misses, conducting thorough root cause analyses and developing actionable recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate safety records, providing timely and insightful reports to management, the OSH Committee, and relevant regulatory bodies.
  • Emergency Preparedness & Response
    • Develop, review, and continuously update comprehensive Emergency Response Plans (ERPs) for all operational scenarios.
    • Coordinate and execute regular drills and testing of ERPs, ensuring a high state of readiness and effective response capabilities in the event of any incident.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field from a recognised institution.
  • Certified training in working at heights, confined space entry, first aid, fire safety and HAZMAT.
  • Served in the grade of Occupational Safety and Health Officer or in a comparable and relevant position for at least two years.
  • Basic Course for Occupational Safety and Health Officers lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Certificate for Training of Trainers (TOT) with the training lasting not less than two (2) weeks from a recognized institution.
  • Be a member of Kenya Occupational Safety and Health Association.
  • Be proficient in computer applications
  • Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
  • Strong knowledge of OSH Act 2007 and other relevant safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication and training skills to engage diverse teams.
