Role Description
The Kenya Paediatric Research Consortium (Keprecon), is seeking three (3) research fellows to contribute to build on the work of the HIGH-Q Programme and foster strategic health system strengthening initiatives. The fellowships will support collaborative projects with county governments and the Ministry of Health (MoH), focusing on workforce capacity, critical care services, and digital health implementation at county-level hospitals.
Key responsibilities
- To be able to work with limited supervision in partnership with Keprecon linked senior scientists to successfully complete the defined projects.
- Support engagement and maintain effective communication with county departments of health, senior county hospital staff and hospitals’ health-workers
- Take a central role in planning hospital visits / surveys in partnership with county officers, including training and overseeing additional survey team members as discussed with senior scientists to ensure high quality data are collected
- Coordinate with the KEMRI-Wellcome CIN team to achieve agreed objectives in the agreed timelines and to deliver agreed outputs
- Contribute to the development of survey tools and complete data entry, data cleaning and analyses as agreed with senior scientists and in collaboration with others as agreed
- Write reports based on documents reviewed, secondary data identified and survey findings and provide effective feedback to counties, hospitals and the Ministry of Health
- Plan and communicate clearly and in a timely manner with senior scientists and the KEPRECON administrative team to ensure efficient conduct of all work with accurate documentation of activities is provided for reporting back to funders
- And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Criteria
The successful applicant will have:
- MBBS, BPharm or BSN and MPH/MSc or MMed and at least 2 years programme management or equivalent experience hospital roles or other relevant fields
- Experience and evidence of excellent prior performance in managing complex projects
- Demonstrated experience in planning and undertaking surveys / research activities including the development of data collection tools (ideally using REDCap or similar software) with linked procedure manuals / SOPs
- Demonstrated experience of engaging effectively with senior health professionals, county or national health managers and other key stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience in planning for and collecting, analysing and interpreting survey data with the creation of high-quality reports.
- Experience of working in a team to agree a plan of work and then achieving agreed objectives
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills including production of reports
- Demonstrated ability to act with sound judgement, sensitivity, and flexibility, and to exercise initiative in adapting preferred approaches when and where required
Competencies
- Understanding of the Kenyan healthcare system and experience working in clinical contexts (ideally county hospitals)
- Capability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences from senior officials to communities and to make effective use of in-person and online team meetings to achieve set objectives
- Ability to use planning and budgeting approaches and to develop clear plans for allocating tasks and tracking their conduct.
- Ability to manage a temporary field team effectively to ensure efficient use of peoples’ time and available resources
- Competence in basic descriptive analyses of survey data and development of concise and effective analytic plans with creation of high-quality written reports
- Excellent range of skills across the MS Office suite
- Have high energy, clear goal orientation and a strong work ethic.
- Strong organisation/programme management skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and work within tight deadlines
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and to multi-task
